Walnut
Dimensions: 8 L x  0.75W

Usually, when you think of a spoon, you imagine a circular shape, but the artist drew inspiration from a grain bucket and scoop often used in old country rice and grain mills called 곡식 바가지, which is used to scoop up rice and other grains. Based on the idea, he added an angled form, and if you look closely, the artist added a little carving pattern on the bottom of the spoon as his signature. Lee Chang Hee felt quite a bit of pride at the playful finished product, especially because it looked – to him – like a miniature cooking spoon. Use for desserts, stirring cocktails, or tea.

The product(s) you receive might vary slightly from the product picture due to the nature of your product(s) being 100% handmade. Any item you purchase is one of a kind. There are no two items that are exactly the same.

Care: Due to the nature of the material, there may be distortion or cracks caused by ambient humidity, temperature, or direct sunlight. When cleaning, wash them under running water with a soft sponge. Please store in a well-ventilated shady area. If the spoon starts to feel rough, add natural oil (like walnut oil or flaxseed oil) and apply a thin layer of natural wax for wood using a paper towel and dry it in a shaded place for 2 to 3 days. You can use it again as if it were new. Not microwave or dishwasher safe.

He has been working with wood for only four years, but has yet to be bored.

Lee Chang Hee started woodworking organically when he saw wooden plates – his admiration sparked his interest and after doing a little bit of research to see how to make the plates himself, he decided to take a wood turning class. After the class, he began to experiment felt true freedom in his experimentation. Through woodworking, he met the vehicle that would usher in the about-face in his life. The artist quit his IT job and moved to the countryside to continue his practice. He says, “Wood is not a medium you can win against. You can only work in the way the wood wants you to work. And you can’t rush anything.” Wood gave him permission to be agile and change with his medium. He has been working with wood for only four years, but has yet to be bored. For one, wood is a tough material, and there are so many varieties, so when he touches wood, it always introduces something interesting. There is a ritual in taking care of wood. It may feel laborious, but Lee likens the process to his meditation practice – his pieces would last forever if you care for them correctly (a poignant life lesson, too).
