Kim Ki Tae
Spalted Maple Wood
Dimensions: 5W x 5L x 7.5H

A top heavy vase rests on an unbelievably small foot on this Spalted Maple Wood sculpture. The artist Kim Ki Tae has chosen to keep discoloration from fungal infections to highlight the beauty of the natural wood grain: a living example of where modernity meets nature. Finished with a simple oil to highlight the beauty of the grain.

Care: Dust occasionally. Not for use with food or water.

The artist's works preserve a natural feel, but in a modern shape.

"Working with NHG is artist Kim Ki Tae’s first time selling overseas. Kim started his career as a Commercial Director, and worked in the field for nearly two decades ¬(a high-stress job working with demanding clients). In his mid-thirties, stressed from his job, the artist would walk into nature, and felt the warm embrace of the trees. It was a good way to exercise, sweat, and of course relieve stress. After 19 years as a director, he turned in his resignation with no plans. For two months afterwards, he read books. Then, he tried furniture making. The furniture making wasn’t his cup of tea, but he loved working with wood. It reminded him of the happiness he felt two decades prior, when he first started directing. He’s thankful that wood has added meaning and happiness to his life, and hopes to share this warmth with his collectors. The artist uses a variety of Korean woods, and creates a design depending on the charm of the tree. The artist believes the shape is most important and with just a 1 mm different, a piece can change completely. His works preserve a natural feel, but in a modern shape.Though they might have some similarities to historic vessels or jars, he has updated them to feel modern."
