Woodworking gives Kim Hyunu new hope and new excitements every day
Artist Kim Hyunu is the black sheep in his family. He is the outlier who loves art and photography and his parents blocked his passions fiercely. Though he wanted to attend art school, he followed his parents’ orders and attended a trade school instead. But, the creative calling was a siren song – and just a couple months into schooling, he dropped out to pursue something that stoked his fire. The artist spent years working as a photographer, but on a trip to Goseong, a quiet Eastern sea town in Korea, he decided to give his hobby of woodworking a chance. Woodworking for Kim Hyunu is something that gives him new hope and new excitements every day. The medium is exciting because when you open into a log, each piece of wood looks different. It feels like he’s uncovering a surprise every single time. Kim is a young artist – but knows that woodworking is something he feels he can do for a long time. He spends his days quietly and simply – cleaning his studio in order to also organize his mind and finding inspiration from looking outside his window at the changing seasons. He works in silence most days.
