Artist: Kang Seuk Keun
Dimensions: Mini 7.75W; Small 8.25W; Medium 9.25W; Large 9.75W

This new series from Kang Seuk Keun was completed in 2021. These hyper-lightweight dishes express nature through color and texture. In particular, the dish tries to convey the emotions of white winter to his wife. The artist wanted show his beloved wife what it felt like to grow up with the snow of winter and the sky during the season. The artist grew up in a city where snow accumulates 1 meter in winter, and he values the memories and emotions of the time.

Kang’s bowls are finished in a special lacquer technique where he heat-cures his lacquer so that his pieces can be used like a ceramic. They can hold food, water, and be washed the same way as a ceramic – this is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. This technique, along with the bowl’s hyper thin edges and lightweight form earned him a spot as a finalist for the LOEWE Foundation price in 2021. We are proud to represent his work at Namu Home Goods.

The product(s) you receive might vary slightly from the product picture due to the nature of your product(s) being 100% handmade. Any item you purchase is one of a kind. There are no two items that are exactly the same.

Care: The bowl can be washed with detergent and is safe even if you put it in water for a long time.

Nature may seem wild and unpredictable, but if you look close enough, it is created with rules and order

Kang Suk Keun spent his childhood in a village with the most beautiful nature, nearby two lakes and the greatest national park, The Seorak mountain. As a child, nature was his best friend and a great teacher and for a long time, he has studied the curved lines of nature. Nature may seem wild and unpredictable, but if you look close enough, it is created with rules and order – a pattern that gives beauty and comfort to the viewer. The lines of nature are the origin of all of his works. The artist hopes that wherever his wooden bowl is, he hopes it gives the same as the comfort and beauty that nature gives.
