Han Gyeol
Zelkova Wood
Dimensions: 11 W x 3H

The deep, shiny reddish color comes from the nine layers of lacquer artist Han Gyeol painted on this Zelkova wood bowl. The hyper-thin edges are a testament to his handiwork – no machine is able to shave wood so thin and accurately. Han Gyeol is a multi-disciplinary artist, furniture maker, and an expert in speaker electronics. He is a unique blend of both right and left brain and uses his talents and life experiences to create unique pieces. Though he is well-known for this large scale furniture pieces, but it’s these hand-held bowls and vessels he prefers. He says it’s more fun to watch his pieces take shape quickly in front of him and he doesn’t get bored.

Care: Food and water safe. Please note, this piece does have natural cracking on the bottom so will not hold water or watery foods. Thread and bowl is coated in Ottchil, a UNESCO heritage practice of coating natural sap on wood. It is safe to wash with soap and water. Handwash only and dry immediately after.

Paju-based artist Han Gyeol was born into the woodmaker’s life.

Paju-based artist Han Gyeol was born into the woodmaker’s life. His father and grandfather worked closely with wood, making joints for furniture. He didn’t immediately start his career with wood, in fact, he started as an operator at one of Korea’s largest broadcasting networks. He had a fascination with technology, specifically speakers. His first art show was to take discarded microphones from his former employer to turn them into speakers. From there, he became an artist. These days, the multi-disciplinary artist is focused on smaller wood pieces. Much of his work is made of Korean Oak. He has a fondness for Korean Oak because of the cultural importance. The Korean Oak tree used to be so important that fathers would plant a Korean Oak when they had a daughter. They would wait until the daughter was engaged to be married to cut down the tree and make furniture to send as her dowry.
