Lee Chang Hee
Korean Chestnut
Dimensions: 5.25W x 0.5H

We call Artist Lee Chang Hee’s plates “Calm Night Sea” in respect to the artist’s intention. The plates are dense with a yin-yang balance of narrow hand carvings across the face of the plate and then finished in natural black lacquer called Ottchil. Ottchil is a natural sap from the Ott Tree, and is an art practice that has been in existence for hundreds  if not thousands – of years. When wood is covered in Ottchil, it becomes resistant to insects, water, and humidity. The organic pattern on the surface of the plate reminded the artist of a calm night sea, and we’ve maintained his original concept. The artist preferred a matte black finish to make the final piece look heavy and antique. Lee Chang Hee suggests serving simple foods on the small plates like traditional pressed sweets or tea snacks.

The product(s) you receive might vary slightly from the product picture due to the nature of your product(s) being 100% handmade. Any item you purchase is one of a kind. There are no two items that are exactly the same.

Care: Due to the nature of the material, please be careful of leaving the plate in sitting water, extreme temperature, or direct sunlight. When cleaning, wash them under running water with a soft sponge. Please store in a well-ventilated, shady area. Not microwave or dishwasher safe.

Namu Home Goods Lee Chang Hee

He has been working with wood for only four years, but has yet to be bored.

Lee Chang Hee started woodworking organically when he saw wooden plates – his admiration sparked his interest and after doing a little bit of research to see how to make the plates himself, he decided to take a wood turning class. After the class, he began to experiment felt true freedom in his experimentation. Through woodworking, he met the vehicle that would usher in the about-face in his life. The artist quit his IT job and moved to the countryside to continue his practice. He says, “Wood is not a medium you can win against. You can only work in the way the wood wants you to work. And you can’t rush anything.” Wood gave him permission to be agile and change with his medium. He has been working with wood for only four years, but has yet to be bored. For one, wood is a tough material, and there are so many varieties, so when he touches wood, it always introduces something interesting. There is a ritual in taking care of wood. It may feel laborious, but Lee likens the process to his meditation practice – his pieces would last forever if you care for them correctly (a poignant life lesson, too).
