Originally used as a small dish to offer up food and drink during Jesa (or Ancestral Rites) it is said that the smaller plates were used to hold up a shot glass of Korean rice liquor, or soju. Jesa is an old tradition of expressing gratitude to ancestors during the holidays. Normally practiced by nobility and royalty, ancestral rites are now common in modern day. You can find this shape commonly in Korean art and homewares due to its historical importance.
